Artist Book Weekend

The London Art Book Fair opens this week and the Artist Book Weekend runs as a parallel project to it. It aims to complement and question the Whitechapel Gallery event by creating a website platform that concentrates a calendar of events at local bookshops and galleries during the ‘weekend’ of the 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 25th of September 2011. The project is started by The Mews Project Space and is run by all participating organizations.

TONIGHT at two columbia road Bethan Wood and friends including Gary Card and Silo Studio launched pieces for London Design Week.

Bethan launched her collections PIVOT; a large collection of manipulatable rings (they all have pivot points hence the name).
PUSH; a smaller collection of rings that move though multiple layers of thin bronze, gold or silver to adjust the size of the ring and its ornament and...
PARTICLE; Chunky bracelets incorporating what has become her staple design material (usually applied in her furniture exclusive to Nilufar in Milan): vintage laminate and applied her trademark technique: having it laser cut into incredibly amazing shapes that resembles another surface (in many cases this is marble).

Don't be fooled by the totem like structures, this is proof Bethan's artistry at work in the displays of the PARTICLE bracelets. Totem sound familiar?

Perhaps you saw her Totem works at Miami Design?...

Both her rings and bracelets are worn aplenty by Bethan as she sweetly sips a sugar cup hosting the drink of the evening (something pink with Barcadi) and I think I'll skip that fashion week party!

PHEW. Fashion week still isn't over and design week kicks off.

Over the last couple of days I have been hanging out with David Saunders (aka daviddavid) in his pop up full of Geometric goodies including T-shirts, colouring books, bean bags, prints, and hand painted works.

The store is decked out by the lads from Piano Hill (Phillips de Pury) and opened last Friday with a terrific turn out.

His boutique will be open on 37 Mounmouth St - in the centre of Covent Garden for the next six weeks and will host a selection of fashion and design related friends to give talks and screen films each Wednesday.

Kicking it off on the 28th of September with film maker extraordinaire Kathryn Ferguson the talks also feature Susie Lau the famed fashion blogger and Lulu and Rhonda - queens of London's 'Slow Retail' Darkroom.

PRESS RELEASE:

Channel 8 is an un-programmable channel. It receives no specific data, no pixels are initialized or assigned specific forms or colours. The channel is responsive only to random flows of information.

Artists Martin Cole, Matthew Johnstone and Daif King similarly feed from streams of non-specific data. Assisted by new media and due to cycles of information alluding to the zeitgeist, their influences and inspiration form correlations.

This data is transferred into digital drawings, reworked into sound, gifs and animations, or processed into moving image. It is often then reapplied within consubstantial cyclical networks.

References are purposely vast; drawing on familiar imagery from contemporary visual culture as well as famously reproduced artworks, their production also retains a specific liking to a certain over-saturated 1980's aesthetic and is often divisive in it's referencing and reproduction of painterly abstraction.

One could speculate that some of the visual connections between these references are due to the mechanical look of certain abstract work, the 80's infatuation with the digital, the question of relevance in relation to contrasting versions of history and the question of who art is for.

Matthew Johnstone's work comprises video accompanied by compositions of 2D and 3D works. He has exhibited in group shows including; Proto-Bla, Elevator Gallery [2011], Filmstationen, Copenhagen [2011], Open End, TANK TV. Annual selection [2010], Hackgold, SPACE Gallery [2009], Lobby, Hales Gallery [2007] and Majestic, presented by Run Gallery at Whitechapel Gallery [2006]. He was commissioned for the Public Sculpture 'ARC' for Heathrow Terminal 5 in 2006 and was recently reviewed in Art Selector for his duo show at Elevator. Johnstone completed his MFA in Art Practice from Goldsmiths College in 2010 and works in London.

Berlin based British artist Martin Cole is personally dubbed 'The Ultimate Illustrator' and works predominantly with Photoshop. Martin has exhibited widely including; BYOB, Venice Biennale [2011], Martin Cole (solo), Galerie Delko, Rennes [2011], D&AD New Blood London [2010], Christies - Frieze Art Fair [2010] and Beefmater Gallery, Portland [2009]. He graduated from Swindon University and being awarded 'Graphic Designer of the Year' in 2008. Martin has been named one of "Qompendium's 100 Illustrators to watch" and worked for clients including Nike.

Daif King is an artist and musician based in Auckland, New Zealand. In recent work he uses digital rendering to create 'paintings' which intentionally draw on broad references. Kings work has been included in exhibitions including; Daif King (solo), Camp A Low Hum Gallery [2011], The Corridor to Success, The Composing Rooms, London [2010], Depth Metal (solo), High Seas Gallery, Auckland, [2009] and performances at Artspace, Auckland [2008]. Daif studied Fine Arts at the University of Auckland.

The Only Time She Was Caught Was by The Mother of The Boy She Took The Keys From

Rasha Kahil is the Lebanese artist who lives between Beirut and London, represented by The Running Horse space in Beirut, where her inaugural solo exhibition ‘In Your Home’ opened last month. The ongoing photography project features deviant self-portraits of the artist in ‘your’ home. Rasha launched her third publication to sit alongside the show, limited to 100 copies, each with limited edition photo prints, the design is by ‘Julia’ and it features a foreword by Jeanne-Salomé Rochat.

This is Rasha’s third publication, the first being the self published XI and La Gueule du Monde, which included anonymous self-confessional sex stories and a selection of images from her blog titled La Gueule du Monde. GEM’s followed, a study of her dear friend for an exhibition with KK Outlet.

CB: When did you start your project ‘In Your Home’ and what inspired it?

RK: “In Your Home” came about quite intuitively. I was staying at a friend’s house in Berlin, and as he left me alone in his flat one evening. I starting playing around with a new 35mm point-and-shoot camera I had just acquired, a second-hand Yashica T4 that I’d bought on ebay. After taking a few still lives in his flat, I pointed the camera back at me, and with the use of the self-timer, shot nude self-portraits in his kitchen and bedroom. I never told him what I did. There was a thrill in knowing that he was unaware of the fact that I ran around his place in the buff and recorded the experience. And that was the birth of the project. From then on, whenever I found myself alone in someone’s flat, even if it’s just a few minutes, I’d whip out my Yashica (later on using a Contax T2) and shoot myself nude in the domestic space, unbeknownst to the host…

CB: You position yourself sculpturally and in most cases it’s clear you’re out of context with the environment. I’m assuming this adds to the pensiveness and awkwardness of the images. You said that when hosts do find out their response is usually shock.

RK: Yes, their first reaction is usually of slight shock and embarrassment. They seem to be disturbed by the violation of their space, asking when and how it happened, and where they were at that point. A bit like your own reaction when you recognised one of your friend’s space in the series… But it quickly turns into appreciation for the image itself, giggles and maybe a sense of pride somehow? At the opening, I witnessed one of the ‘victims’ having their picture taken next to the image of their space, and a friend has already framed a small test print of the image I took in their space in the very room in which it was shot. A sweet little mise-en-abyme…

CB: For your show at Running Horse, was it a mutual agreement to do the show, or was it your idea? Also, in Lebanon you are getting a lot of press. Do you think it’s the femininity of the work that creates the buzz or something else?

RK: The Running Horse represents me as an artist for the Middle East, so when Lea Sednaoui, the gallery director, suggested programming a solo show, we both decided that the series ‘In Your Home’ would be perfect, as I felt it was slowly approaching completion. I can’t deny that the central theme of the body and the use of nudity in the photographs did create a buzz, but I also believe that people and the press reacted so well to the show because of the humble nature of the series and the fact that the nudity serves as a tool rather than as a finality to the project. It is not sensationalist nor controversial, rather the nude body in the project, with its repetitive use in each of the 36 images blended within the domestic spaces, presents itself in a stance of vulnerability and humanity. It is approachable and non-threatening. In that sense, the audience seemed to embrace the series and the press was very positive.

CB: You also get to work with other people, for example for the foreword and design of the ‘In Your Home’ book. Can you tell me about these relationships?

RK: In terms of the ‘In Your Home’ book, it was particularly interesting for me to work with others in terms of the design and foreword, because the project was so introspective from the start. Being the photographer, subject and producer of the book, I felt that input from artists of other disciplines would bring in new dimensions to the book project. Julia are 3 graphic designers/artists that I met at the Royal College of Art and whose work I’ve always admired. I trusted them completely with the design of the book: they were supportive of my work since our college days, and I’ve always particularly appreciated their conceptual input in the design work. Rather than a documentation catalogue of the work, they turned the book into a standalone artwork in itself. And I was very happy to have Jeanne-Salomé Rochat, a co-founder and arts editor of the gorgeous Sang Bleu magazine and a performance artist herself, write a foreword to the book and cast her own eyes on the ‘In Your Home’ series. Her text is a wonderful fable that adds a new, fresh layer to the reading of the work. In general, my work is very confessional and intimate, so I’ve always loved to collaborate with other artists on new projects, particularly if they come from different media. I am currently collaborating on projects with an illustrator, an art director and even another photographer. Ideas can be enriched through the input of someone that comes from a different angle, and I always appreciate someone jolting me out of the depths of my twisted mind, even if it’s for a short while! The ‘In Your Home’ exhibition will open in London on the 13^th of October at AF Projects and will travel to Istanbul later in the year. Following Apple's keynote yesterday, during which they announced OS X Lion, iOS5 and iCloud, Steve Jobs' autobiography "The Book of Jobs" has rocketed up the Amazon charts, despite only being available for pre-order. The $18 Walter Isaacson book is now placed at Nº27 in the charts and will be officially released on 6 March, 2012.

CARTER presents is pleased to announce their second solo exhibition with Brian Reed. For this exhibition Reed has produced a new body of work constructed from crumbled and twisted sheets of steel, coloured with deeply emotive black tinged with hues of purple and blue, coupled with fiery red and deep reds.
These new textural colour field works continue Reeds exploration into the relationships of human interaction and develop on the concepts formed in the pervious series Sanitised; a series blacked out portraits of persons wanted for crimes of a violent and sexual nature, their images sourced from police websites.
In these new works Reeds metaphysical investigations into malevolent desire and the disturbance surrounding this attitude, bring the duality of emotions experienced by the parties involved in an encounter of malice to the fore through visceral textured mark making and sensual colours.
Accompanying these pieces are‘found photography works from the on-going series In-between the Noise. This series appropriates discarded photographs of personal imagery through enlarged reproductions with the appropriation acting as an invasion on personal privacy and our attitudes to public and private identities.Brian Reed recently exhibition in Unrealised Potential at Cornerhouse Manchester and WALLS at UNION gallery in London and has work placed various private collection in the UK and Europe.

For her first show with Sadie Coles HQ, Spartacus Chetwynd presents Odd Man Out, a play that runs for five hours every Thursday and Saturday this May. The performance hopes to enliven bored Londoners. The five-hour performances revolve around ideas of democracy, the right to vote and the disincentives against engaging in politics. Giant photocopies work as barriers to divide the gallery into alternative routes, with voting booths at the start of the exhibition leading through to different performances. Be careful who you vote for in Odd Man Outas your vote has a literal effect on the outcome of your circumstance.
In one area there is an oracle. An alternative route leads via an inflatable slide to the downstairs gallery, where visitors encounter a play based on Doris Lessing's The Grass is Singing. This one-woman mime drama is a kind of punishment or purgatory. Another entrance leads to a giant monster in a dark setting amid a sea of bin liners and charred limbs. Nearby, if you make it across the Dantescape, the audience can find a puppet re-enactment of Jesus and Barabas being offered to the multitude.
The coordinated action of the puppeteers creates a symbol of inter-reliance and cooperation. Embedded within this presentation of democratic power is an analogy for society and the body politic: social cohesion, which does not occur through democracy, is made evident through the power of the puppet!
From the voting booths onwards, Odd Man Out seeks to be demonstrative, pushy and preachy, much like the theatrical Christian 'Hell Houses' of the American south that persuade an individual to turn to Christianity. Odd Man Out squishes and squeezes non-conformism and free thinking out of its audience.
Spartacus Chetwynd (b. 1973, London) studied Social Anthropology at University College London before studying art at the Slade and the RCA. She has performed and exhibited internationally. Major solo exhibitions include 'Help! I'm trapped in a Muzuzah Factory', Le Consortium, Dijon, France, 2008, and 'Spartacus Chetywnd', Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zürich, Switzerland, 2007. Recent performances include 'A Tax Haven Run By Women', Frieze Projects 2010 and 'The Visionary Vineyard: Free Energy Workshop', Hayward Gallery, London 2011. In 2010 she was shortlisted for the Jarman Award for video artists, and she was recently shortlisted for the Max Mara Art Prize For Women (to be announced in September). Her work is included in 'British Art Show 7: In the Days of the Comet', touring to Glasgow and Plymouth later in the year. In 2007 a book was published on her performances by Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst.

GALLERIES have a tendency of feeling clinical, almost hyper real and supermarket-like.

Friedrich Kunath however, completely destroyed this preconception at the (perhaps most clinical gallery) space: White Cube, Hoxton Square. Instead the space was transformed into a relaxing, bourgeois environment, enticing visitors of the Private View to loiter inside rather than by the beer and park opposite (as per usual White Cube Openings).

“It smells like Dover St Market” was the first thing a friend said as we entered. I felt slightly dazed as I found myself relaxing, rather than stiffening and feeling observed, as one can do in a typical Private View environment.

Tracy Emin even seemed relaxed, chatting to friends beside Kunath’s self modeled sculpture, complete with grey balloons and inflamed phallic nose.

This astonishing transformation was due to the incisive, universally familiar imagery used throughout the varied media in Kunath’s first UK solo show.

Kunath seems to draw from everything to create ‘The Most Beautiful World in the World’ specifically, according to the press release; “Song titles, lyrics and books. . . Conceptual art, German romanticism and symbolism.” From these influences Kunath spins a comical and moral narrative into his works embodying “love, loss, loneliness, optimism and dejection” reminding us that the world is beautiful due to all the insanity and corruption, not just togetherness and freedom we can experience.

His ideas seem vast and intelligently composed, stirring nostalgia in the viewers by combining; liner sketches of paternal looking figures, inky dreamlike watercolours, graphic romantically inspired painting and prints with comical and satirical sculptures and ready-mades, scent and sound emanating from onion-print covered speakers – All of course in a black walled White Cube, carpeted with mauve, altogether this creates a cinematic and theatrical environment for the artworks to play out their varied narratives in Kunath’s extraordinarily imaginative ‘World’.

Perhaps due to the psychedelic imagery I was reminded of a documentary I had seen earlier in the day which interviewed the creator of Ecstasy and MDMA along with 100’s of other hallucinogens and mind altering drugs; Alexander Shulgin whom is now in his 80’s. The interviewer was gushing over the disbelief of meeting someone whom had had such a “God-like impact on the World” this also reminded me that power can come in strange forms - that negative and positive conclusions can spring from unlikely circumstances and both have to be cherished as part of our world.

Although the ‘Dover St’ theme didn’t continue much after the initial scent, I smiled to myself when I noticed a sly Marc Jacobs shoe seemingly discarded amongst some onions (something I would be interested in querying further) and a the Kunath figure was wearing a rather nice b-store like suit.

Kunath states that his current abode in LA has influenced his work saying “the colours got brighter and the topics became darker” although if there was one topic which wasn’t covered in the show I would be surprised, see for yourself. It’s a rarity to see an artist bring so many elements together into one show, a catastrophic clash of visual forms, and yet still it stirs a sense of inner calm.

Hans Ulrich Obrist. Always Relevant

Indisputably one the leading figures within the contemporary art world, Hans Ulrich Obrist is a curatorial superstar. The co-director of London’s Serpentine Gallery is prolific, constantly traveling the world to explore emerging art scenes, interviewing luminaries across the cultural spectrum, churning books out like a well oiled machine and curating critically acclaimed exhibitions and biennales across the globe. Meeting someone with such a high-profile could be daunting - indeed, Obrist talks almost in complete paragraphs from one of his books, like a runaway freight train careering through references and ideas so quickly it’s hard to keep up - but in person his charm and affability instantly puts one at ease.

Like psychoanalytic philosopher Slavoj Zizek who has been called ‘the Elvis of cultural theory’, Obrist embodies the paradigmatical jet-setting global intellectual. It’s a model of practice aspired to by almost all would-be curators and yet, with the increased recognition of the ecological cost of air travel, could be uniquely of its time. At its peak in the 90s, Obrist’s traveling amounted to almost 350 days a year. He calls this period his years of ‘lehr und wanderjahre’, of learning and migrating. The roots of this nomadism came from growing up amidst the close-nit network of small Swiss cities, which meant that Obrist could regularly visit three cities in a day to view exhibitions. He also cites reading medieval codices at the monastery in St.Galen about how monks would go from monastery to monastery learning everything that one had to offer before moving on to the next with inspiring his wanderlust. It’s the same with his expeditions through the global art world. “It’s a form of incurable curiosity”, he says, “When I arrive in a city I’ve never been to I’ll ask, ‘Is there a Louise Bourgeois here? An artist who is a great pioneer of a generation that I should meet? Who are the young emerging practitioners, who is the future?” It was only in 2000, when he accepted a position at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, that he had an office and began to concentrate his activities in one place. Now he has two different, parallel time schedules; in the office monday to friday and then voyaging at the weekends.

Central to Obrist’s life and practice has been the idea of experimenting with and editing our experiences of time. “I am very interested in how we construct subjectivity and time in a very varied way”, he explains, “We’re told to live in a very homogenized way but I want to resist that, to resist homogenized time and create a diverse experience of it.” Like the quintessential mad scientist, Obrist’s first experiments with time were on himself. “It’s a real magical trick”, he says of Da Vinci’s sleep pattern, which he adopted and involves sleeping for fifteen minutes every three hours, “ultimately you sleep seven or eight times per day. But you are never tired.” He acquired a huge alarm clock of the type used in military dormitories to make sure he didn’t oversleep, “It doesn’t even need coffee, all you need is a really powerful, really loud alarm clock because otherwise, if you sleep through it, the rhythm is gone.” Understandably, this routine created problems socially, with Obrist alluding to inadvertently nodding off in libraries or restaurants as soon as his three hours of awake-time were up. The following experiment came from Obrist’s obsession with Balzac’s extraordinary output and habit of drinking up to 50 coffees a day, leading to similarly weird moments, “I would go for a coffee in Paris and order ten expresso at once. They would bring nine more chairs to my table as they thought a bigger group of people had ordered.”

Obrist sees the role of the curator as that of a ‘junction-maker’, of being a utility in terms of helping artists’ project happen, “producing reality beyond exhibitions, helping artists produce the future but also remember the past - that embalming process against forgetting”. When he was young it was only in Germany and Switzerland where a dialogue about curating and the idea of the curator as a profession existed. Now he receives calls from daily newspapers in Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, all wanting to know what curating is. The concept of the curator is at large and has gone far beyond the artworld. “Now blogs are curated, conferences, websites, even shop windows on the high-street are being curated”, he explains. “But sometimes they don’t know where the word comes from, that it has this long history in the art world as the curating of objects. Through the 20th Century the curator slowly became the one who does exhibitions, because the exhibition itself became a medium.”

A phrase the curator keeps returning to is ‘polyphony of centres’. “There is no longer a quest for an absolute centre”, he submits. Art is flourishing today in points across the globe, co-existing centres that can’t be reduced to a simple hierarchy or lineage as in saying that Paris lost the avant-gardes to New York. “For me, the most exciting experience of 2009”, he concludes, “was reconnecting with the Brazilian art world, which is so unbelievable. Music, literature and art are all coming together - a whole new generation of optimism and energy.” It’s in this way that we can see the role Obrist’s ongoing odyssey plays. Through visiting these pockets and learning whatever they have to offer before returning and moving on to the next place, Obrist creates links, vectors and junctions that inescapably open up the borders not only of art but of the multiplicity of worlds we lives through today.

Sally Cruikshank (born 1949) is an American animator, most famous for her 1975 animation ‘Quasi at the Quakadero’, a cartoon that follows two ducks, Quasi and Anita, and a robot called Rollo at an amusement park with attractions such as the Tunnel of Youth, Think_O_Blink Paints Pictures of Your Thoughts, and Madame Xano and her Fabulous Dream Reader. ‘Quasi’ was a ‘midnight movie’ favourite at the time, and as well as being voted as one of the 50 greatest cartoons by members of the animation industry, was selected in 2009 for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. Her work has featured in many episodes of CTW’s Sesame Street and in title sequences for films such as Mannequin (1987). She was the head animator for Snazelle Films in San Franscisco from 1972 to 1981, and in 1986 Cruikshank won the initial Maya Deren Award for Independent Film and Video Artists given by the American Film Institute, along with Stan Brakhage and Nam June Paik. Today she lives in California. Sally Cruikshank at Snazelle Films in the 1970s.

CARTER presents is pleased to announce their third solo show with Dallas Seitz.. For this exhibition Seitz s has produced a new series of works that continue his explorative and reoccurring interest in colonialism, mythology and cultural approaches towards artefacts and their display.
The exhibition of works uses the story of In Search for Lake Victoria as a launch point .
In 1854 John Hanning Speke joined　Richard Burton on their ill feted expedition to Somalia. The party was attacked with Speke being taken prisoner by tribal warriors and stabbed with spears several times before he was able to free himself and escape. Even though Burton escaped capture he was wounded in the face by a javelin impaling both his cheeks. Two years later Speke and Burton went to Central Africa in search of the Great Lakes and both men hoped that their expedition would locate the source of the Nile. The journey was extremely strenuous and both men fell ill to a variety of tropical diseases. Speke went temporarily deaf after a beetle crawled into his ear and he was forced to remove it with a knife. After an arduous journey the two became the first　Europeans to discover Lake Tanganyika　(although Speke was blind with ophthalmia at this point and could not properly see the lak! ! ! e). They heard of a second lake in the area but as Burton was too sick travel, Speke went alone and found the lake which he re-named Lake Victoria. Dallas Seitz
In this group of works Seitz combines African imagery and traditional portrait sculpture with a seventies hobby craft aesthetic associated with macramé and ceramics, leather and wood working. Tribal art and its influence on contemporary art and skilled crafts of weaving and pottery to the origins of Cubism, is the underscore of Seitz s investigations into the influence of colonialism on culture from the Victorian era to the present day.
As in previous sculptural works, objects made by his parents and grandparents are an incorporated element and by combining personal historical artefacts with a fictional museum - informed by wider cultural history - Seitz comments on the subjective nature of the museum in a gallery context. In Search for Lake Victoria creates a new wing of Seitz s ongoing project Sumeum of Kanmind.
The demand to which antiques respond is the demand for definitive or fully realized being. The tense of the mythological object is the perfect: it is that which occurs in the present as having occurred in a former time, hence that which founded upon itself, that which is authentic . The antique is always, in the strongest sense of the term, a family portrait : the immemorialisation, in the concrete form of an object, of a former being-a procedure equivalent, in the register of the imaginary, to a suppression of time.
And once again his remarks should be taken as equally applicable, by extension, to exotic objects; For modern man, in any case, changing country or latitude is essentially equivalent to plunging into the past (as tourism well demonstrates). The fascination for hand- made or native products, for bazaar items from all over the globe, arises less from their picturesque variety than from the anteriority of their forms of heir manufacture, and from the allusion they contain to an earlier world-invariably a throwback to the world of our childhood and its playthings. Exhibition: Melanie Griffith's Knee, works by Clunie Reid

The project space is in Hackney Downs Station Waiting room.

Clunie Reid appropriates images, symbols, digital photography and text, found in advertising and the everyday abundance of imagery and text we are surrounded by.

Revelling in the trashy materials of throw away culture, shiny paper, stickers and tape, her drawings implicitly
demand a substantial engagement from the viewing audience, using satire to break through normative readings of stereotypical cliches, insisting on an interrogation fuelled by humour.

In a not dissimilar way to a diagram, they allow for

"knowledge of the other circumstances which one does not see". (P. Stewart.)

She has recently shown work for the "Art Now" programme at Tate Britain with James Richards, and she was in "Newspeak: British Art Now" at the Saatchi Gallery in 2010. She had a solo show at Studio Voltaire in 2010: "Dumb Down, Get Dressed, Move Out". She was selected for East International (2007) and won the John Jones Art on Paper Award at Zoo Art Fair (2008). She is represented by MOT international.

Reid has put together a publication for the exhibition: 'Melanie Griffith's Knee', which will be on display, and will also be available as a pdf for downloading from the website. There are instructions for printing if desired, we recommend www.servicepointuk.com for 7 pounds.

Poster: Reid has kindly produced a poster for BR and these are free to take away by visitors to the work.
There are a limited number of these and they will be distributed per week throughout the exhibition.

Improvised talk: Adam Mercer will be at BR for an improvised talk in the project space, a narrative that might, or might not, engage with the audience. All welcome, please just come along. 2pm, 26th February.

Project space talks on the diagram: Robert Garnett will discuss how 'humorous abstraction' constitutes an 'abstract machine' that functions 'diagrammatically' in a number of different ways. Sunday 3rd April, 4-6pm.

When I Think About Forever I Get Upset by Artist Helen Turner in collaboration with Choreographer Dolores Dewhurst Marks, curated by Che Zara Blomfield.

When I Think About Forever I Get Upset evolves from Turners interest in the repetitive nature of consumerism and the narcissistic tendencies, which are synonymous with habitual retail. Turner refers to this as the Theatre of Consumption and considers the addictive nature of consumerism as a direct result of its performativity; it is therapeutic and cathartic to perform consumption - to enduringly gaze at oneself, to narcissistically indulge in ones socophilic instincts and to pretend that one is improving oneself. By consuming we temporarily quench our thirst for satisfaction, but when the consumer high fades the come down ensues encouraging a return to consumerism in order to attain our capitalistic high.

This repetitive cyclical behavior, which is echoed in When I Think About Forever I Get Upset, is reminiscent of therapy used in the overcoming of a trauma. Cyclical behavioral therapy functions by consistently repeating a situation in order to overcome it, which can run the risk of remaining fixed in its rotation, trapped in its routine and unable to progress forward; like a permanently rotating carousel.

Helen Turner has worked closely with creative choreographer Dolores Dewhurst Marks in order to capture minimalist movements executed by women indulging in their reflection in Fashion Boutique Aime. The subtlety mechanistic style and perpetual repetitiveness of the choreography reminds us of an experienced factory worker who executes a routine sub-consciously and fluently without reluctance or hesitation.

Max and Ché Launch their first ready to wear collection on at Carter Presents Gallery,

(www.carterpresents.org, 59 Old Bethnal Green Road).

The gallery is currently boasting a show of paintings by Kirsten Glass and Patricia Ellis' Paintings titled 'The Trouble With Michelangelo' which set a nice, intriguing and intellectual background for the show.

On the night of there will be a performance by Artist Helen Turner in collaboration with choreographer Dolores Dewhurst Marks.

The choreography is based on the repetitive nature of consumerism and is drawn directly from observing the subconscious and narcissistic tendencies in habitual retail.

The Look ‘Book’ which Is also launching on the 25th has had photography by Rasha Kahil ( www.rashakahil.com ) and styling by Matthew Holroyd of Vague Paper ( www.vaguepaper.com ).

The images have then been meticulously cut out and pasted alongside and amongst 'inspiring forms' in fashion, art and nature from a selection of vintage and new books as well as personal photography and painting produced and gathered over several years.

The images are then scanned, printed then hand bound into a hand painted canvas cover limited edition of 50 (panted as a single 2 meter canvas) - then there will be 50 for general distribution with a color copy of one of the painted canvas covers also available.

Max and Ché;

Max and Ché founded by Max Allen and Ché Blomfield in 2009 present their first ready to wear, single fabric jersey collection.

Comprising of 14 pieces the collection is targeted at the boutique audience with affordable prices to fit in with lively and flamboyant collections.

The outcome is simple, comfortable and very wearable wardrobe fillers that are finely cut to mix comfortably into any wardrobe.

The garments are all self-finished and design features include, draping, hoods, drawstrings and bias bound seems.

All garments are made in the UK.

POV stands for Point of View, and the first series focuses on five London-based photographers whose self-motivated, single-themed projects exhibit a uniquely female perspective.

Each edition of the POV FEMALE London series will be produced in a small run of 100 copies, available from 22nd February 2011 and priced at £12. Twenty limited-edition bookcases comprising signed copies of all five monographs and an archival-quality print from each photographer will also be available at £300.
